Shiatsu and Craniosacral Therapy

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork, which originated in Japan and is based on many of the same principles as acupuncture, with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. After assessing the constitution and condition of the client, the Shiatsu practitioner employs the use of pressure techniques utilizing the thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows or feet along energy meridians of the body. Shiatsu also includes rocking, kneading and stretching techniques. These techniques improve energy (qi) flow throughout the body, which helps to reduce stress, increase flexibility and maintain a high level of energy and health. The relaxation response induced by Shiatsu allows the receiver's natural healing ability to regenerate and repair the body/mind/spirit. Balance between the parts maintains the harmony of the whole.

Qi, which flows through energy meridians in the body, can become knotted or concentrated in some areas and deficient in others causing pain, fatigue and a general lack of well-being. Qi imbalances that are left unattended can become chronic health conditions. This work is very effective in treating chronic conditions that do not respond to traditional Western medicine or as a complement to Western treatment. It is also excellent as a wellness routine as it can prevent serious health issues by correcting minor imbalances before they become chronic conditions.

What is Shin Tai?

Shin Tai is an extension of Shiatsu work, which assists in re-integrating and synchronizing the various aspects of one's being by treating the appropriate energy level of the receiver.

Various life events or traumas can cause energy to become trapped, leaving a portion of oneself in that time period or causing fixation on the future. Shin Tai aims to recover life force so that one is free to live in the present with a greater level of awareness and development.

The Shin Tai practitioner determines the priority of treatment to restore trapped or lost life force based on mechanical testing, energetic assessment and intuition. This work may include:

  • Meridian work (Shiatsu)
  • Gentle alignment of the structure using muscle energy and fascial release techniques
  • Central channel (Meningeal) release
  • Fascial release
  • Cranial work
  • Chakra clearing

What can I expect from a Session?

Shiatsu/Shin Tai provides a unique experience for each person, as we all have different life experiences and conditions. My goal is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for my clients to allow them to open up to the healing potential of their body/mind/spirit.

Shiatsu/Shin Tai is traditionally performed on a futon with the person fully clothed. I also use a body cushion on the futon for greater client comfort. For onsite sessions, I use a professional treatment table or chair.

A session usually lasts one hour, but I have seen great results with just 15-minute corporate chair sessions.

Many clients report feeling rejuvenated and energized for several days after a session.

Through an intake which includes asking questions, observation and palpation, I evaluate the client's current condition and create a treatment protocol that will best balance the client's energy to aid in the healing process. I welcome feedback during or after a session.

How do I prepare for a session?

If possible, please avoid eating a large meal or performing vigorous exercise for one hour prior to your session. If you are very hungry, eat something light and easy to digest like a piece of fruit or some vegetables.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing -- I suggest a t-shirt or light sweatshirt, sweatpants and socks. Fibers should ideally be cotton as this allows for the greatest assessment and conduction of qi.

Avoid wearing jewelry as this tends to obstruct the body's energy.

Please wear little to no make-up. This allows me to better assess your current condition.

Women should avoid wearing skirts as this prevents me from performing some techniques, such as hip rotation, which can greatly benefit the receiver. Please do not wear jeans as this makes it difficult to do point work around the sacrum.

Some treatments release toxins. Be sure to flush your system with plenty of water before and after the treatment. If possible, soak in a hot Epsom salt bath after your treatment.

How often do I need to have Shiatsu sessions?

Regular treatments are important, but the recommended time between sessions will vary depending on your condition. I often recommend that clients participate in four weekly sessions and then gradually taper off to monthly sessions as their condition improves.

I ask that you commit to four sessions before you decide that this work is not assisting you in your healing.

Do I need Shiatsu treatments if I am not experiencing pain or other health issues?

Because Shiatsu/Shin Tai can correct energy imbalances before they become chronic health issues and therefore strengthen the immune system, it is beneficial for everyone to help them maintain good health. This work also brings into balance the emotional and psychological centers so it engenders a sense of well-being and allows the receiver to be open to experiencing life fully with enhanced self-awareness and inner peace.
